Juan Tamad

Tuesday this week, we had our wallpaper challenge but with a twist. Instead of having a non-designer office mate tell us the theme he/she wants, one designer (A) assigned a subject (whether it’s a person, object or just about anything), then designer A will tell the next designer (B) on what to do about the subject, thenĀ  designer B will tell designer C on what to do and this goes on, till the ending of the story will be done by designer A, assigned by the last designer. Implementation phase of the wallpaper challenge was still one hour.

The order of designers in this challenge was:
Wayne -> Michael -> Me -> Clyde -> Dominique -> Eman -> Lance -> Wayne

Wayne was the one who gave the subject, while Lance was the last designer in order and the one who gave the ending back to Wayne. We didn’t know what happened to the story with the other designers until the challenge ended, and we got to see all the wallpapers.

Our subject was “Juan Tamad”, a Filipino character named as “Lazy John”. Juan is so lazy that he would sleep under a tree with his mouth open to wait for a fruit to fall on his mouth. For more information about him you can read this Wikipedia article.

The task that was given by Michael to me was:

Juan Tamad is being held as a hostage by the ALIENS because he ate the special bayabas (guava fruit).

This was really fun compared to our normal challenges. I’d surely love to do this again. Oh yeah, the green stuff that’s on the Juan Tamad’s mouth is actually the bayabas that ended up looking like a ball, I know it lacks details.

I’ll place the link about this challenge; featuring all the designers’ work plus the story once we post it on DFC.

My Spirit Animals Book!

December 2009, I won the Spirit Animals Book Giveaway on Abduzeedo. I only posted about this now, since I got the package just today. And boy I’m happy! Besides the reason of getting the book for free, it really is beautifully inspiring, with artworks from nine talented artists.

Even if I don’t seem like it, I am actually a believer about spirits, zodiacs and astrology, so this book really is very interesting for me. I’m so glad that this ended up being mine. Big thanks to Hannah Stouffer, for the book. She’s my favorite illustrator in this lovely book, and she was also the one who sent this to me. Also, thank you to Abduzeedo for helding a wonderful contest!

Elusive Happiness

After a few weeks without wallpaper challenges held, we’re back again this year hoping to do better than last year.

Our challenger for this week was Katherine, another member of the sales team of our office. Her theme was quite a challenge:

Elusive Happiness

I came up with the idea of a lady eating chocolates. Since many girls complain about chocolates and its ingredients, but still end up happy after eating them.

This piece is using the “fast” vector style again, due to the one hour limit of the challenge. “Fast” vectoring seems like my home style now, I’m too comfortable in it, almost all of my previous challenges are vectored, and I can actually mount my concept in it with a simple style during the alloted time.

Mello on Death Note was supposed to be the character featured on this wallpaper, since he was my actual reference for this. But due to the time constraint of the challenge I ended up with this silhouette type lady, which I think gives more impact to the whole chocolate idea.

Anyway, I wish to use other styles in the future wallpaper challenges too. Having one style just seems to make me fed up.
