Still the same rules apply, one hour execution time. The topic was decided a week ago; for us be able to have time to think of a concept, but I ended up empty handed. Thus, here’s my half-decent entry for the challenge. I was aiming to have the proper perspective on the strokes, but I had no time left.

Changing rules/themes for the wallpaper challenges is the current fad of the designers’ at my workplace to keep it from being stale and boring. For today’s challenge, we decided to go for Style as our chosen challenge type; Pop Art was the winner on our votations, and the style used for our pieces. Though I find the actual pop art’s description as confusing, I decided to use this definition:

A genre of art that uses elements of popular culture; often uses techniques from commercial art and advertising

Popular culture, specially on my case would revolve around no other thing than Anime. Darker than Black was my chosen Anime since it really is cool, and I always wanted to create a wallpaper for the series. I’m not really impressed with my work; though Hei is really making my desktop sexy, so I’m still happy. Hope you guys would like my little Darker than Black tribute as well.

The catch for this challenge was to be given a material to work with. We may use any style, any concept as long as we’ll have the material on our output.

Each of us were given the chance to state on what the material to use; we had votation afterwards. The material that won and used on our wallpapers was:

An ampersand ( & )

Girls & Curls is the name of my entry, using the ampersand as the base of the character’s hair. Font used on this piece is Bickham Script Pro, a font pretty enough perfect to create some lovely curls. I also used the letter “e” of the font for her eyes and lashes. Hope you like it.

Tuesday this week, we had our wallpaper challenge but with a twist. Instead of having a non-designer office mate tell us the theme he/she wants, one designer (A) assigned a subject (whether it’s a person, object or just about anything), then designer A will tell the next designer (B) on what to do about the subject, then designer B will tell designer C on what to do and this goes on, till the ending of the story will be done by designer A, assigned by the last designer. Implementation phase of the wallpaper challenge was still one hour.

The order of designers in this challenge was:
Wayne -> Michael -> Me -> Clyde -> Dominique -> Eman -> Lance -> Wayne

Wayne was the one who gave the subject, while Lance was the last designer in order and the one who gave the ending back to Wayne. We didn’t know what happened to the story with the other designers until the challenge ended, and we got to see all the wallpapers.

Our subject was “Juan Tamad”, a Filipino character named as “Lazy John”. Juan is so lazy that he would sleep under a tree with his mouth open to wait for a fruit to fall on his mouth. For more information about him you can read this Wikipedia article.

The task that was given by Michael to me was:

Juan Tamad is being held as a hostage by the ALIENS because he ate the special bayabas (guava fruit).

This was really fun compared to our normal challenges. I’d surely love to do this again. Oh yeah, the green stuff that’s on the Juan Tamad’s mouth is actually the bayabas that ended up looking like a ball, I know it lacks details.

I’ll place the link about this challenge; featuring all the designers’ work plus the story once we post it on DFC.

After a few weeks without wallpaper challenges held, we’re back again this year hoping to do better than last year.

Our challenger for this week was Katherine, another member of the sales team of our office. Her theme was quite a challenge:

Elusive Happiness

I came up with the idea of a lady eating chocolates. Since many girls complain about chocolates and its ingredients, but still end up happy after eating them.

This piece is using the “fast” vector style again, due to the one hour limit of the challenge. “Fast” vectoring seems like my home style now, I’m too comfortable in it, almost all of my previous challenges are vectored, and I can actually mount my concept in it with a simple style during the alloted time.

Mello on Death Note was supposed to be the character featured on this wallpaper, since he was my actual reference for this. But due to the time constraint of the challenge I ended up with this silhouette type lady, which I think gives more impact to the whole chocolate idea.

Anyway, I wish to use other styles in the future wallpaper challenges too. Having one style just seems to make me fed up.

Wallpaper Challenge week # 18. Our challenger was Cielo – part of the sales team of the company, and her topic was:

Lazy Sunday

This is by far my most colorful submission. Featuring my chibi character used to portray myself, I’ve used this character on a few of my submissions, as well on the current design of ChanLu. Due to the one hour limit of creating the wallpaper, I am not satisfied with the outcome. There are no highlights and shadows on the character. The vectored character is too stiff, specially on the hair part. Colors used are not well thought of. And the concept is typical, but I guess this is one decent submission.

Monday has passed, another wallpaper challenge. This week, Mae was our challenger. I really liked her topic, and I love the outcome of my wallpaper, but I don’t think my concept will suit her taste though. Her topic was:

With a smile…

My concept was to create an evil smile. I didn’t have much time, so I vectored an animal’s face that is already sinister looking on its own – a fox. After I finished creating the wallpaper, I realized it looks like Naruto’s Kyuubi. Created in just about 30 minutes I didn’t place any effects on this one, for I was going for a simplistic wallpaper. Let’s just say, I’m tired of my messy wallpapers all this time.

Seriously lame title, huh? Ma’am Gigi – my favorite teacher, asked me to create a wallpaper/background for her master’s thesis. She wanted the background to be vectored, abstract themed and contain the logo of our school (my alma mater). It was assigned to me a long time ago, but I was at a loss of ideas since I was restraint by the “formality” of the subject. I was just able to create it just now, because she needs it today. That is so like me, doing the job since it’s already needed. I know its bad, and I need to change that habit somehow.

While creating this wallpaper, it accidentally had a center point without me realizing it. It’s quite astonishing that this image can be actually related to me, and my experiences during my stay on that school. The colors of sadness and happiness, the ups and downs, how they mix together perfectly and evenly to leave an unforgettable stage in my life.

Here’s what I’ve got. Hope you’ll like it. Created with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

This means the team Neri (she’s a programmer) and I belong to at my workplace. The Tech Team is composed by programmers, web designers, a system administrator and project managers.

Coming up with a concept was hard due to factors like having few pictures, too many people on our team, and too little time. Cropping image of us one by one would be really painstaking, while the outcome might suck since collages aren’t really that great specially with too many people. So, I’ve come up to my last resort, abstract art. This is the first time I’ve tried this effect so it must really look that bad, so bear with it.
